BenzBigBad Composition Videos

In 2009 my new thing is to create what I will call “composition” videos. These videos are composed using several layers of HD recorded footage, then mixed using the realtime mixing tool, Modul8.

The result is a highly abstract-yet-relevent composition that gives the impression of the time and space without being too specific and literal.

NYC Subways

NYC was created using footage of New York that I took during a trip in December 2008. The audio you hear is a variation of what was recorded with the video. The AV mixing was accomplished using Modul8 and as the video was transformed (sped up, reversed, etc), the associated audio went through the same transition.

There are 5 layers of video and they include (a) on the moving subway train, (b) standing on the subway platform while the trains go by, (c) recording in the 42nd street station of a drummer banging away on 5 gallon white buckets, (d) recording in the 42nd street station of a mirimba player while a guy sits on a bench across from me, (d) a time lapse of the nighttime skyline from the revolving restaraunt at the top of the Marriot, near Times Square.

The resulting video is a very impressionistic piece, in which the viewer can feel like they are in New York, they can tune into one or two layers, but you never quite feel like to completely get what's going on.

The video is recorded using Modul8's logical recording, then rendered afterwards into HD, then down converted for the web.

The audio is recorded using Audio Hijack Pro.

The individual video and audio tracks are then brought into Final Cut to align them, add a title, and render them to different output formats.

Principles of Lust

Warning: mature viewers only

Principles of Lust is created using video clips from the Enigma music video called the same name.

The audio is created using GarageBand hooked up to my MIDI keyboard with with the sound called "Cosmic Reflection" enabled. As the notes are changed on the keyboard, new video clips are triggered in Module8 and at the same time the audio sound plays in GarageBand. This allows for very tight alignment between audio and video.

The video is recorded using Modul8's logical recording, then rendered afterwards into HD, then down converted for the web.

The audio is recorded using AudioHijack.

The individual video and audio tracks are then brought into Final Cut to align them, add a title, and render them to different output formats.
